VENDEE GLOBE IN CHINA – First Visit of the World’s Greatest Sailing Race in China at SO! DALIAN June 18th to 20th 2015

The Vendée Globe, the biggest offshore sailing race in the world, which takes place every four years, will introduce its 8th edition in China, departing on November 6th 2016 from les Sables d’Olonne (France). In collaboration with Beneteau Asia, the Vendée Globe, will make its China Premiere at SO! DALIAN.

The Vendée Globe is legendary in the world of sailing. Its simple and unchanged concept since its creation represents the ultimate adventure for a sailor: a race around the world, single-handed, non-stop and without assistance. Many epic sailor stories, sometimes tragic and often heroic, as only sailing can generate, have marked its history and made the race the ultimate sailing challenge in which every sailor dreams of participating («the most difficult sporting challenge in the world today» according to British skipper Alex Thomson).

The excitement around the 2012 edition was tremendous with a media impact of close to € 200M, thanks to exciting sporting adventures but also to the use of an exceptional media device, allowing to share the skippers’ adventure from the boat.

Asia's interest for the Vendée Globe is already significant as the region represented 17% of the total global media broadcast in 2012. Many other signs point to a growing interest in the race in Asia and particularly in China, such as the good performance of the Dongfeng team in the Volvo Ocean Race or the increasing desire to participate in a future edition of the Vendée Globe coming from Chinese skippers.

To answer this growing interest from Chinese fans, the Vendée Globe is exploring new means adapted to the Chinese market, which would allow the public to closely follow the 8th edition from China. This first exploratory mission will help build a specific action plan that will be announced during the first half of 2016.
